1 Virtual make things happen April 24 9AM - 1PM Online via Zoom Play Video sign up now DATE April 24th, 2021 WHEN 9:00 am to 1:00 pm WHERE Online Are you a creator, crafter, engineer, and hobbyist who loves to explore new forms and technologies? Are you delighted by how things work or function, and want to create it yourself? Then we got a hands-on, interactive, and innovative learning opportunity for you! If you are a student, family member, educator, or community member at iLearn Schools, join us for our Virtual Make Things Happen event happening on April 24th, 2021, from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm. Through this Maker’s Festival, we want to create a community where participants see themselves as proactive producers who are creative, take action, and “make things happen” even in a virtual space. Sessions Session #1 Bristle Bots w/ iLearn STEM How can we travel on mars? Students will create a bristle bot to help navigate them through the terrain of Mars. Bristle bots will encourage students to work with DC motors and circuits. (Grades 4-12 Recommended) Fun with Bubbles w/ SUEZ North America What causes bubbles to pop? Why do bubbles stick together? Discover the science behind bubbles and water. Students will repurpose a plastic water bottle to create a bubble snake. (Grades K-4 Recommended) How to make an App? w/ Vineyard App How to make an app? Ever wanted to make your own app? What about your own games? In this class, students explore the world of coding and app development. You’ll leave with your own app that you can share with others! (Grades 5-12 Recommended) 9:50 AM - 10:50 AM Session #2 Gut Bacteria w/ Penn State Scientist What type of bacteria is in your stomach? Students will understand the different types of bacteria living in the human gut by comparing and contrasting the types of foods that they consume. Students will also understand the evolution of bacteria. (Grades 4-12 Recommended) Water Cycle in a Bag w/ SUEZ North America Why does it rain? How do clouds form? Students will learn how water moves within the water cycle. The activity consists of students learning how to make a “water cycle in a bag.” They will then watch what happens when the bag is hung on a sunny window. (Grades K-4 Recommended) How to make an App? w/ Vineyard App Ever wanted to make your own app? What about your own games? In this class, students explore the world of coding and app development. You’ll leave with your own app that you can share with others! (Grades 5-12 Recommended) 10:50 am - 11:50 am Session #3 Why Do Boats Float? w/ SUEZ North America Why do large ships float while small objects sink in the water? What properties allow items to float? Students will learn the basic concepts of density, buoyancy, the force of gravity, and more. This activity consists of students creating a floating object with supplies commonly found at home. (Grades K-5 Recommended) Marshmallow Structure Challenge w/ Texas A&M Engineer Who can build the best structure? Students will understand what an engineer does on a day-to-day basis. Students will apply their knowledge and construct a marshmallow launch structure that will hit a target! Students will demonstrate an understanding of potential and kinetic energy. (Grades 5-12 Recommended) How to make an App? w/ Vineyard App Ever wanted to make your own app? What about your own games? In this class, students explore the world of coding and app development.
